Get Pro-Active with your Laundry Room Appliances: Inspection & Maintenance Tips

Washing machines and Dryers offer a great deal of convenience in our busy lives. Help these appliances stay in good shape over the years and they will do you a favor and not cause property damages. Maintaining these machines will help avoid a breakdown, leaks, water & fire damages, and other issues. If you are going away on vacation for an extended amount of time make to unplug BOTH the washer and dryer to prevent damages.

Washing Machine:

STEP 1. Check hoses regularly for bulging, cracking, and bubbles. Replace the hose if you find a problem, preferably with a steel braided one.

STEP 2. Move the machine 4 inches from your wall to prevent hoses from kinking (same goes for the dryer!)

STEP 3. Keep the machine level to prevent vibrating and rocking during spin cycle, which can damage the floor if not fixed.

STEP 4. Prevent musty odors and mildew by leaving the lid open between loads. Also make sure to WASH your washing machine with a store bought solution or hot water, vinegar and baking soda though an empty load.

Dryer:

STEP 1. Most important step in maintaining your dryer that everyone should know: Clean your lint filter before EVERY load!

STEP 2. Inspect your ducts to make sure they aren’t damaged or pinched.

STEP 3. Know where your outdoor vent is, and make sure it isn’t clogged. It is also very important to have the interior venting system serviced and cleaned yearly. You can use a tool as shown in the video, or hire a professional.

STEP 4. Replace coiled-wire foil or plastic venting ducts with a rigid, non-ribbed metal duct.

*Increase the longevity of your household appliances by taking a few minutes, every time you change the batteries in your smoke detectors to inspect and maintain them. You could even set-up an appliance maintenance schedule to make sure you don’t ignore any.
